Welcome to Class 1

Our teacher Mrs Hugill teaches us three days of the week and Mrs Lindley joins us for the other two days.  We are very lucky to have three Teaching Assistants – Miss Ducat, Mrs Wood and Mrs Harrop – to help us with our learning across the week.

Class 1 is where the fun happens! Every day is set up by our teachers to make sure we enjoy our learning and make the most of the exciting indoor and outdoor learning space at our disposal!

In Class 1, we know that it is really important for our children’s families to be as involved as possible in their learning. Our teachers communicate regularly with grown-ups through our ‘Marvellous Me’ app and all of Reception and Nursery’s ‘wow moments at school’ are shared through our online learning journal, ‘Tapestry.’

Every term parents will receive a curriculum newsletter which explains the focus for the term and a little bit more about how our families can support their child’s learning at home.

Nursery

In Nursery, we love to lead our own learning, choosing how to plot our path through each day and how to explore the amazing setting that our teachers have provided for us. This means: building and creating with sand, water and playdough; dressing up and role playing in the home corner; going on adventures every day outside – whatever the weather! We also enjoy relaxing with a book in our reading corner, telling our own stories with small world toys and building amazing things with the construction materials.

All of this sets us up to believe that learning is fun and this means we leave our Nursery year confident, resilient, fascinated by the world around us and ready for anything!

Reception

In Reception, the fun continues as we enjoy plenty of space and time in our school day to carry on adventuring. Alongside our choosing time, Mrs Hugill and Mrs Lindley help us to develop our core skills in reading, writing and maths. We have daily lessons in phonics, handwriting and maths, where we begin to link sounds to letters, read and write meaningful sentences and apply our counting and number work in real-life scenarios. As the year develops, we then begin showing off our new skills in our play, ending Reception as confident and independent readers and writers – ready to start Year 1! Alongside all this, we develop as well-rounded children, able to solve problems, try out new things without fear and form close bonds with our friends and teachers.

Year 1

By the time we reach Year 1, we are very keen to learn more formally and tackle the National Curriculum with enthusiasm. Mrs Hugill and the other teaching staff enable us to work in a practical, hands-on and collaborative manner to make sure that learning is still fun and engaging. We move on to learn about alternative pronunciations of graphemes in phonics which helps us in turn to read fluently and spell accurately and we are given plenty of opportunity to apply our maths skills to problems and real-life scenarios. We do daily guided reading lessons to develop our inference, summarising and predicting skills; we also read our own reading books daily with a grown up. Alongside all this, we tackle the wider curriculum through our topics, which are inspired by our own interests, observed by the teachers the previous term. As the oldest children in Class 1, we are given plenty of responsibility to take care of our environment and lead the smaller children in their learning.
